Berberine is a biologically active isoquinoline alkaloid with a wide range of pharmacological effects. This study considers epigenetic regulation as a mechanism for controlling berberine biosynthesis in plant cell cultures. The role of DNA methylation, histone modifications and stress-induced signaling pathways in activation of secondary metabolism is analyzed.
