This review examines genetic engineering approaches applied to four filamentous fungi — Pleurotus ostreatus, Schizophyllum commune, Aspergillus nidulans, and Trichoderma reesei for producing mycelium-based materials with enhanced properties. Targeted modifications, including gene knockout and CRISPR/Cas9 editing, effectively improved tensile strength, Young's modulus, and hyphal packing density.
